Cracow, Kraków in Polish, is the most famous and arguably the most beautiful city in Poland. It is among those rare cities of Europe where the medieval town is still the vital centre of the modern metropolis. Cracow's business, social and cultural lives are still centered in and around the Rynek - the largest medieval market square in Europe. Rich in treasures of art and architecture, happily preserved to this day, the city contains an impressive 6,000 historic buildings and monuments, and over 2.3 million works of art! In 1978, Cracow's Old Town was placed on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list. Many nicknames have been given to the city of Cracow: "the Little Rome", "the Florence of the North", "the Little Paris", and even "the Polish Jerusalem"

The beginnings of the University of Economics date back to 1882 when the Municipal School of Commerce was founded in Cracow. It specialized in preparing students for the profession of merchant. In 1896, it was replaced by the Higher Trade School, designed for the fourth graders of secondary schools. After World War I, when Poland regained independence, the trade school conducted courses for secondary school graduates. Later, in 1924, the Institute of Commodities was founded and the school of commodities offering 2-year courses. It was on the basis of these two organizations that Poland's third private economic school (following Warsaw and Lvov) came into being. Established on 25 May 1925 by the state authorities, it was given the name of the Higher School of Commerce (WSH), and on 1 October 1925, the first academic year was inaugurated. This moment is regarded as the commencement of the history of today's Cracow University of Economics which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this academic year.
